Batman: The Last Battening
Someone on Twitter asked for the annotated Batman DVD guide I wrote up for a friend, so I'll Just Leave This Here. It's very subjective, though; some episodes I didn't care for, someone else might. ( Guide behind the cut. ) |

Avatar: The Last Furry
Movie review time! So, James Cameron's been poking away at his magnum opus for about ten years now. It's finally in theatres -- and just in time, since when he started, 3-D as a mainstream concept was laughable. Now, it's commonplace and accepted. Good for him. But does the movie work? Not "Does it live up to the hype", does it WORK? Let's say it works despite itself. I'll get the negative out of the way right now. The story is predictable and utterly tedious. Everything happens that you expect to happen -- a single sentence can summarize up the whole thing, "It's one of those movies where greedy white guys wanna displace the natives, except one of them goes native and leads a resistance." Done. You now know the entire plot of Avatar. The story unfolds exactly as you'd expect, a straight as an arrow path with no ambiguity and no nuance whatsoever. That makes the whole affair completely tedious... there are times when you just want them to get on with it, because you already know how it's going to go. For a movie so alive with color, it's totally black and white, and doesn't even bother trying to reach for anything beyond the basics. So, if you aren't watching for the story, why watch? Three things: Characters, Spectacle, and Experience. The characters are pretty nicely designed. They have distinctive voices and personalities, and the interplay of them as they move through the scenarios presented is interesting. Our hero is a bit generic, true, but everybody around him in Pink and Blue works well. None of them really surprise us or have any grey area to them, but they're enjoyable to watch and even the CG characters are so well animated that the ACTING comes through nicely. I can watch these guys and care about them, and that's the key to knowing if they work or not. The spectacle is off the freaking map. Not just the 3-D, which is terrific (if a bit difficult to get into, since the image feels a bit too 'processed' at times) but the large-scale battles, the amazing environments, soaring through the sky... even walking around on ground level is amazing. This is a treat for the eyes and you always want to see more of it, with the movie only too happy to dish up new things to enjoy as you go. That's where the experience comes into play; beyond Michael Bay-esque explosions and huge-scale objects to stare at, soaking in the WORLD that's been designed and coordinated by the artists is a delight. Even the more subtle visuals are quite a sight to behold, and they all blend together seamlessly into a living, breathing world... one that's easy to suspend your disbelief and revel in. Overall... you can enjoy this movie, provided you go into it with the right frame of mind. It's a summer blockbuster, a popcorn movie. The writing is not nearly on par with Cameron's other work. But that's fine, if you go so you can watch blue people fight space marines and explore an MMORPG-esque fantasy world. And now is the time to go, while you can still catch it in 3-D... on home theatre systems it'll still be impressive, but it's not going to be 'what the doctor ordered'. So, if you've got an afternoon to kill and want something that'll entertain the hell out of you even if it doesn't fire up your neurons, it'll play nicely. |

Canada!
Yes, it's getting near that time again. I will be in the Toronto area from 2/11/2010 to 2/15/2010, visiting with Matt and Ann in Whitby. As always, I hope we can get together for some shindig or other. Just bought plane tickets on the deluxe Porter Airlines. Final Journey Through The Worlds: 33% Complete
Been updating the Progress List with each completed request; given the current request count, I'm about 1/3 done with this project. Aiming for New Year's; we'll see if I'm that good. I originally would update with how many sentences I'd written for each one, but eventually I realized I was having too much fun with these, and thus some ended up really long. Some also are snippets from stories I'd already had partially written. I'm also learning a whole lot about myself as a writer--some of which I'm not sure I like, some of which is pleasantly surprising. Requests, of course, are still open, and will be until I finish. Merry Christmas/Happy Holidays, peoples. |

Retro Hana To Yume 2001-02
What was in Hana to Yume 9 years ago? Cover goes to Shanimuni GO. Color pages for Hana Kimi (2), Never Give Up!, Dear Mine, and Tokyo Crazy Paradise. Breakdown: Hana Kimi 80. This was about 2/3 through the series, which has been released here by Viz. The author is currently sort of on hiatus, though she drawns the occasional Hana Kimi side story. Ame Nochi Hare. This was a short 4-page manga. The author is currently drawing a different one for Betsuhana. Never Give Up! 38. About halfway through this series, which was one of the Tokyopop culls, sadly. Hopefully it may finish one day. The artist is currently drawing Tteiuka Koi ja ne? for Akita Shoten's Princess. Shanimuni GO 48. About 1/4 through this sports manga. Viz is releasing the earlier Baby & Me. Author has been on break since finishing the series earlier in 2009. Dear Mine 14. This short shoujo series is from the author of CMX's Teru Teru x Shonen. She's currently doing Isshi Ni Neyou No for HtY. Descendants of Darkness 58. If Hakusensha makes good on their promise for this series to return in 2010, this may actually be collected as a Volume 12 chapter. Hello From The End Of The Universe. Another short 4-page gag series. Tokyo Crazy Paradise 91. Only a few volumes away from the end of this still unlicensed series. Likely unlicensed as it's darker than her current series, Skip Beat!. W Juliet 41. A little over halfway through this romance, which was licensed by Viz. The author currently draws Kyou Mo Ashita Mo for Hana To Yume. Tea Prince 79. Still unlicensed, because of size most likely, we're about 3/5 through this series. Author is currently drawing Orange Chocolate for Betsuhana. Satisfaction Guaranteed File 16 (Part 2). Why yes, another Tokyopop cull. This is about halfway through the series. Author has been inactive lately. Cosmo Na Bokura! 27. This series was almost complete, it would finish the following month. The artist is better known for Please Save My Earth, and is drawing the sequel to that atm in Betsuhana. Angel High School. Another quick 4-page gag series. Artist does short series currently for Silky and The Hana. Nadeshiko Club 5. This series has just begun, and was recently licensed by CMX. Author just started Youth Patisserie this month for Betsuhana. Odoriba Hotel 2. A quick 1-volume series, the author has a ton of unlicensed series. Currently drawing Innocent Dragon for Melody. さかな島日記. Short gag comic, which the artist is still doing for The Hana. I Hate You More Than Anyone! and Ohoshisama ni Onegai! are on break. Fruits Basket was on hiatus due to injury. Not bad, huh? A lot of licensed series, though some are in recession limbo. Current Mood: impressedCurrent Music: Christmas carols |

Manga the week of 12/30
Let's see what's coming in from Diamond this week! ...nothing. Diamond is taking the week off. OK, does Midtown Comics in NYC have anything coming in from alternate sources? VIZ: Inu Yasha Vol. 44. Shonen. Shogakukan, serialized in Shonen Sunday since 1996. That's it, kids. Comic store shoppers will likely see that volume in 2 weeks. Recs? Hrm, I'm going with Inu Yasha. Despite the weirdness
Tried this (it was up on LS-Sama's journal). Didn't really like the result, but I had to post it because of the last one. ;P Dear Santa...
Dear Santa,
This year I've been busy!
In September I committed genocide... Sorry about that, lunaludus (-5000 points). In June I pushed sometimesamuse in the mud (-17 points). In January I caught a purse-snatcher who stole zibbelcoot's purse (30 points). In March I bought porn for orin (-10 points). Last month I bought porn for roseya19 (10 points).
Overall, I've been naughty (-4987 points). For Christmas I deserve a moldy sandwich!
Sincerely, killpurakat |
Anybody else think it's a little odd to commit genocide against someone, but give their mom porn and have that add to my score? Just weird... Also ganked from lunaludus's LJ (meme time!): Name one or more fandoms, and I will tell you: 1. The first character with whom I fell in love 2. The character I never expected to love as much as I do now 3. The character I would shag any time 4. The character I would slap 5. My three favorite characters 6. My three favorite pairings 7. Which character you I am most like 8. The coolest thing about the canon 9. The lamest thing about the canon 10. My guiltiest pleasure in this fandom 11. What story I wish I could read 12. What story I wish I had written/still want to write Current Mood: creative |

Is it too late to move to Hawaii?
Outside my window, the snow is falling. It's been falling most of the day. It's going to keep falling, with almost no breaks, straight through to Christmas. And just for fun--the temperature is going to go up and down like a yo-yo, so we're going to go from snow, to rain, to snow, to freezing rain, to snow, etc. etc. etc., before the whole mess finally freezes over the weekend. ... 冬が大嫌いじゃ!!!!!Today's story: The Stalker in the Shadows (Phantasy Star IV) Current Mood: aggravated |

sa04 is pumping out some "jock jams" It's not exactly the 'beautiful game', per se. This scene kind of ran away from me, by the end of it. I wasn't expecting to cut it off where I did, but that's fine; this actually serves the story better, since Melvin's turning out to be a lot more of an insistent and angry young lad than I was originally planning in my outline. I listen to my characters and write them how they want to be written; my plans can be changed to better suit what they develop into. It'll all work out in the end. Feedback welcome. I think my auto-twitter-summary thing fires off in an hour, which may nudge this post down, but hey. |
